Xero keyboard shortcuts: the honest guide

Updated June 2026 · by Yuzu Tools

If you work in Xero all day, every extra click costs you minutes — and minutes add up. This page covers the keyboard shortcuts Xero actually ships, where they stop working, and how to drive the rest of Xero from the keyboard.

What's built into Xero

Xero ships essentially one global shortcut — search:

ShortcutWhat it does
/Opens Xero's global search from most screens. Type to find contacts, invoices and transactions, or type a screen's shortcut letter (for example i for invoices) and hit Enter to jump there. An "Add new" option appears below the search bar for quick creation.

The catch, per Xero's own documentation: search shortcuts do not work on the Fixed Assets, Reports, Projects, Expenses and Payroll screens — and the reports area is exactly where accountants spend much of their day.

What's missing

There are no shortcuts for jumping straight to a specific report, no user-definable hotkeys for the screens you open fifty times a day, and no quick way to switch between organisations — the single most repeated action for bookkeepers who manage several clients. Users have been asking for more keyboard navigation on Xero's product ideas forum for years.

Getting real shortcuts everywhere: Yuzu Toolbar

We built a small Chrome extension that adds a command palette to every Xero screen — including the reports area where the built-in search doesn't reach.

ShortcutWhat it does
Ctrl+K / ⌘KCommand palette on any Xero page: type a few letters, hit Enter, land anywhere — invoices, bills, contacts, bank, settings, or a specific report (P&L, Balance Sheet, Aged Receivables…) directly, skipping the report centre.
Ctrl+Alt+1…9Open your pinned destinations instantly — you choose which nine screens deserve a dedicated key.
Enter EscNavigate the palette without touching the mouse.
Palette → organisationSwitch between client organisations in one keystroke (Pro).

The palette, all ~40 destinations and pinned hotkeys are free. It works with any keyboard layout, collects no data and runs only on Xero's own domains.

Bonus: small habits that save clicks

HabitWhy it helps
Learn the / + letter combos for the 3–4 screens you visit most Free, built-in, works on classic screens.
Pin your most-used screens to hotkeys One keystroke beats search-then-type for anything you open daily.
Open drill-downs in new tabs (Ctrl/⌘+click) Keeps your report context intact instead of navigating back and forth.
